Planaria, hydra, vorticella, and other common shrimp tank troublemakers

How to identify common nuisance organisms and when to reduce feeding, isolate, or treat carefully.

Not every small moving thing in a shrimp tank is dangerous. Misidentification causes a lot of unnecessary panic. Many microfauna are harmless, while a smaller group deserves more caution because they can irritate shrimp, harm shrimplets, or explode under heavy feeding.

Worth learning to identify

  • Planaria
  • Hydra
  • Vorticella
  • Scutariella
  • Detritus worms and harmless microfauna

Before using fenbendazole or similar products, check what else lives in the tank, especially snails. Many keepers lose wanted snails through careless treatment.
